Relocating to Portsmouth Virginia
Portsmouth is across the Elizabeth River from Norfolk Virginia. It's part of the Hampton Roads Metro area and home to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Naval Medical Center, both historic and active U.S. Navy facilities. Portsmouth, along with the other Hampton Roads cities, has a rich history dating back to 1620. Back then, the future site of Portsmouth was recognized as a location for suitable shipbuilding and the area was soon settled as a plantation community. It wasn't established until 1752 by an act of the Virginia Gen. Assembly and was named after Portsmouth England. During the Civil War, Portsmouth had quite a big role to play and the city went under different ownership based on who was fighting where. Following the recapture of Norfolk and Portsmouth by the Union forces, the name of the shipyard was changed Norfolk Naval Shipyard and is located entirely within the city limits of Portsmouth.

It offers fantastic tours and great shopping. It also includes both the oldest operating Naval Hospital and the first operational dry dock facility in the US. The area offers a combination of preservation and redevelopment. Other points of interest are the Portsmouth City Park and the Railroad Museum of Virginia.
